General Description
Location: Salina Cruz is situated at the head of the Gulf of Tehuantepec in the state of Oaxaca on the S coast of Mexico. General overview: There is an inner and outer harbour and 3 offshore SPMs. The port has accommodation for general cargo, bulk and tanker vessels. The outer harbour is protected by 2 breakwaters, the east is 984m in length and the west is 330m in length. The water depth in the harbour varies, this is due to silting, however dredging is carried out. Pemex owns and operates the oil terminal and it is one of their largest petroleum installations on the W coast of Mexico with crude oil and petroleum products being exported to Central America, S America, the W coast of the United States and the Far East. Traffic figures: Approx 700 vessels, 13,000,000t of cargo, and 13,000TEU handled annually. Load line zone: North Pacific Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Mar 1 to Jun 30 and Nov 1 to Nov 30, Summer Jul 1 to Oct 31 and Dec 1 to Feb 28/29. Max size: Inner Harbour: LOA 180m, beam 28m, draught 9.1m. Outer Harbour: LOA 200m, beam 32m, draught 9.6m. SPM's No 1, 2 and 3, LOA 350m, draught 29.6m, 250,000DWT. Largest vessel handled: At SPM No 3 "Maria A Angelicoussis", 156,408GT, LOA 332m, draught 23.0m.
