General Description
Location: Papenburg is situated 25nm above Emden on the River Ems.
General overview: The port opens onto the Sielkanal via two entrance locks, the Seesschleuse lock 154 m in length and 26 m in width, for general use, and very large vessels, with up to 43m beam can enter the harbour by the shipyard Dockschlease lock, width 46 m. The harbor basin in the north industrial area of the city of Papenburg has since been expanded by 520 m to a total length of 1,320 m.
Facilities are available for general cargo vessels and bulk carriers, with passenger vessels also using the port. There are two shipbuilding and repair yards in the port. Papenburg is Niedersachsen’s number one port for the cargo handling of peat moss. In addition, agricultural goods, iron, steel, building materials, wood and project cargo are also processed here.
The water area of the port area is 370000 square meters, and the water depth is 3.5 to 6 meters. The total length of berth coastline is 2000 meters, and the cargo yard area is 40000 square meters
Traffic figures: Approx 1,300 vessels, 1,200,000t of cargo, 100TEU, and 1,200 passengers handled annually.

Max size: LOA: 145 m, beam: 24 m, draught: 5.5 m, 9,000DWT.
The shipyard port is accessible for ships with a maximum draft of 8.50 m, a length of 330 m and a width of 43 m.

- Dockschleuse: Gate only, no chamber, for exceptionally large vessels, width 45 m, depth over sill 7.0 m.
The largest vessel handled: "Norwegian Jewel", 92,500GT, passenger liner, draught: 7.7 m.
