General Description
Location: Nagapattinam is situated at the mouth of Kaduvayar River in the Bay of Bengal, approx. 266km S of Chennai.
General overview: Nagapattinam was badly damaged by the 2004 tsumani. It was an open roadstead port and vessels discharged local cargo at anchorage in depths ranging from 7-18m.
Cargoes:
The main exports were onions and feldspar with principal imports being grain and fertilizers.
The port also exported cement to Sri Lanka and imported edible oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.
Nowadays the port only handles minor amount of edible oil imports. Cargoes are also handled at the anchorage by lighters (40t).

Traffic figures: Approx. 160,000t of imports and 53,000t of exports handled by the port annually.
