General Description

Location: Mokpo, also known as Mogpo, is situated on the SW tip of the Korean Peninsula. The port lies in the SW of mainland South Korea, 150 n.m. south of Incheon. General overview: The port, which is on the delta of the rivers Yeoungsangang, Yeong-Am and Geumho, handles dry and liquid bulk, containers, forest products, steel, vehicles and fishing together with shipbuilding and repair. Mokpo has several berth areas including Samhak, which handles export cargoes and passengers to and from the nearby islands, North Port is mainly for ship building industries, Taebul Port supports the inland industrial complexes. The New Port is being developed on an island in the west of the area for vehicle exports. There are 9 good anchorages located in the inner harbour. The Port of Mokpo 2.7 kilometers of quays that can accommodate 14 vessels from 30 to 50 thousand DWT and ten floating piers that can accommodate 90 vessels under 100 tons. The Port of Mokpo also has almost 15 hectares of open storage area with capacity for 461 thousand tons of cargo. The Port of Mokpo's Samhak Wharf contains four berths totaling 793 meters in length with total annual handling capacity for 1.4 million tons of grains, coal, and general cargoes. Berths 1 and 4 can each accommodate one five thousand ton vessel. Berths 2 and 3 can each handle one 30 thousand ton vessel. Traffic figures: Approx. 8200 coastal vessels call at port carrying 10.2 million tons of cargo, and more than 1400 ocean-going vessels arrive/depart carrying four million tons of cargo annually. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: New Port: Draught 15.0m, 50.000DWT. Samhak Port: LOA 250m, draught 10.5m, 37,000DWT. Daebul Port: LOA 210m, draught 11.0m, 40,000DWT. Breakbulk: 65,000 d.w.t. Containers: 65,000 d.w.t. Ro-Ro: 65,000 d.w.t. Bulk: 65,000 d.w.t. Tankers: 65,000 d.w.t.
