General Description
Location: Lorient is located on the S coast of Brittany, at the confluence of the rivers Ter, Blavet and Scorffi, 50nm N of the mouth of the River Loire.
General overview: The port has 950m of quayage which is used primarily for the handling of general, bulk and oil cargoes.
The Commercial port has approximately 1031 metres of mooring quay, which extends right to the coast -13m chart datum, and comprises the following installations:
-the 150 m quay, which accommodates refrigerated cargo ships, ships with conventional cargos and cruise liners;
-the 656m multi-purpose quay, made up of 8 different structures built between 1913 and 2010, which accommodates ships mainly transporting bulk animal feed, and at the N end ships mainly transporting metal;
-the 125m oil station, which can accommodate ships with a maximum tonnage of 50,000 dwt;
-the RO-RO station which accommodates RO-RO ships;
-the 100m unloading quay at Le Rohu catering for sand dredgers.
Traffic figures: Approx 500 vessels, 2,900,000t of cargo and 612,200 passengers are handled annually. The major throughput is the import of animal feeds and hydrocarbons and construction materials.
Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
Max size: Max LOA 250m, draught 12.0m (mean spring tide), 11.3m (mean neap tide). Subject to a reduction of from 0.5m to 1.5m for swell in Passe de l'Ouest.
