General Description
Location: The Port of Kunak is located in Kunak district, Tawau division of Sabah.
General overview: The Port of Kunak serves the local hinterland with general cargo and mainly exports palm oil. The port has a simple landing jetty for loading and unloading small volumes of essential commodities.
Additionally, it is a dedicated crude palm oil port and handles about 1.4 million tonnes of palm oil annually, making it a major palm oil hub. The port also has an oil jetty for tankers collecting palm oil from two privately owned estates.
The use of the jetty for dry cargo loading has decreased due to the establishment of a road link from Tawau to Lahad Datu. The port primarily exports timber, tobacco, and hemp.
Plans are underway to develop Kunak Port as the East Coast’s Central Hub for the export of Palm Kernel Expeller.
