The shipping platform

Location: Situated on Tarawa Atoll, the port of Betio is surrounded by reefs, which open to form a navigable bay off the harbour. General overview: Vessels can berth at the quays but larger vessels are worked offshore by lighters. The jetty can only accept vessels with a max draught of 6.0m. Traffic figures: Approx 80 vessels are handled annually. Load line zone: Tropical. Max size: Draught 6.0m. Largest vessel handled: "NEI Matangare" 1,000GT.
