General Description
Location: The port of Chongqing is located in the SE of the Sichuan Basin and at the confluence of the Changjiang (Yangtze River) and Jialing River. Because of its geographic location the port acts as a distribution centre of industrial and farm produce for the economic centre of Southwest China. There is a substantial rail network helping Chongqing to become one of the most important inland ports for domestic and foreign trade in China. Down river, the completion of the Three Gorges Dam has resulted in increased trade. General overview: The Chongqing Harbour Administration Bureau controls the majority of harbour areas and wharves in the port. There are harbour areas of Jiulongpuo, Dadukou, Lanjiatuo, Jiangjin and Maoertuo. There are dedicated container, Ro-Ro and passenger terminals. The main cargoes handled in the port are coal, petroleum, ore materials, metallic and non metallic ore, iron and steel, cement, grain and containers. The new Chongqing Cuntan International Container Terminal has five berths with a designed throughput capacity of 1,050,000TEU. The quayside is extended out over the river with specially designed overhead gantry cranes to allow containers to be lifted a substantial height straight up from vessels below.
