Location: The Cape Cod Canal is a sea level waterway, extending from a point in Cape Cod Bay approx 50nm SE of Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, to Cleveland Ledge Light, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. General overview: The canal is operated and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The canal saves 135nm and provides a safer route from Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod Bay and points N and E. Transit through the canal is toll free. Traffic figures: Approx 15,000,000t of cargo and 20,000,000NT transit the canal annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA 251m, draught 9.7m. Airdraught 41m. Largest vessel handled: Draught 9.7m, length 251.6m, beam 38.1m.
