Location: Port of Richmond, Virginia, is situated 67nm above Newport News on the James River. General overview: Richmond is a medium sized port handling mainly container and general cargo vessels although there is a busy local barge traffic carrying petroleum products, aggregates and other products. There are 17 privately owned wharves, used mainly by barge traffic and 3 berths for general cargo vessels at the port. Cargoes handled: Tobacco, tobacco products, chemicals, newsprint, forest products, beer, machinery, steel, steel products, waste paper, pharmaceuticals, phosphates, refractory, aluminium, consumer goods, aplite, textiles, project cargo and livestock. Traffic figures: Approx waterborne tonnage 398,440t which includes, container 394,506t and break bulk 3,934t handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA 170m, beam 26m, draught 6.7m.
