Location: Mayaguez is situated near the middle of the W coast of Puerto Rico, approx 190km SW of San Juan. General overview: It is the third largest commercial port on the island and is an open roadstead located midpoint on the W Coast. The bay is easily entered day and night with a good harbour of width 3.8nm and offshore it is protected by reefs which extend across the harbour entrance in a general N by W direction. The Puerto Rico Port Authority operates the terminal facilities. Traffic figures: Approx 3,100,000t of cargo handled and 286 vessels visit the port annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31. Max size: Max draught 8.5m.
