General Description
Location: Kitimat is located at the head of Douglas Channel which is on the coast of British Colombia, 650km N of Vancouver. General overview: Kitimat is a declared public harbour with Transport Canada, the Port Authority. However Transport Canada does not administer any port facilities within the limits of the harbour.
Private companies that operate facilities within Kitimat Public Harbour are the Alcan Company of Canada Ltd, Eurocan Pulp and Paper Co Ltd and Methanex. These companies handle only their own products. There are currently two projects in progress to handle LNG through Kitimat in the near future and several other energy projects are planned. The port is an ice free port mainly involved in the export of aluminium, paper and petrochemicals.
