General Description
Location: Fray Bentos stands on the left bank of river Uruguay, 92 km. from Nueva Palmira (starting point of the Parana - Parguay Waterway); 385 km. from Montevideo via the Martin Garcia Channel or 560 km from Montevideo via the Parana Mitre Channel.
General overview: The port is a major meat packing and grain centre with 3 wharves, 2 of which are "L" shaped and situated close to the town, and the other "T" shaped and situated 1nm WSW. Cargo handled: Forest products, citrus, barley, fertilisers and sunflower.
Berths: There are three quays.
-Deep-Sea Quay: length: 125 m; width: 43 m; depth: 9.0 m; draft: 9.0 m; remarks: loading and discharge of grain, timber, citrus fruit
-River Quay: length: 224 m; width: 22 m; depth: 7.0 m; draft: 7.0 m; remarks: coasting trade
-Anglo Quay: depth: 7.9 m; remarks: not operational
-Grain Terminal is operated by Terminales Graneleras Uruguayas SA
Facility: Grain silo storage capacity 17,000 tons; conveyor belt rate of 130 t.p.h. loading rate; 500 t.p.h. discharge rate. Additional 40,000 sq.m. of warehousing available.
-Bulk Terminal is located approximately 6.15 n.m. upriver of Fray Bentos and 2.75 n.m. upriver of the Fray Bentos-Puerto Unzue bridge.
Facilities: Quay with dolphins at either end, total length 272 m. Terminal handles dry bulk ores and timber. There are two storage areas. 1x72,000 sq.m. (dry bulk, timber) and 1x38,000 sq.m. (dry bulk) totaling 110,000 sq.m
Load line zone: Summer.
Max size: Draught 9 m. , no LOA and beam restrictions
