General Description
Location: The Port of Canical lies 4nm W of the E extremity of Ilha da Madeira.
General overview: The port is being developed to replace Funchal as the main freight handling and Industrial Free Zone port for Ilha da Maderia. The port is sheltered by two breakwaters and can accommodate six ocean going vessels simultaneously. Situated on the east coast of Madeira, Caniçal Commercial Port is the island’s main point of entry and exit of cargo, having a container dock, a long quay that can receive three container ships simultaneously and a smaller one for RORO ships.
It is the only port in Madeira which can receive containerised cargo, general cargo, solid and liquid bulk cargo. It has two main berthing docks, North and South. The North pier is 400 m in length, allowing up to three container ships to berth simultaneously, each having a maximum 120 m length overall and a maximum 7 m draft. The South pier is 271 m in length, being designated for general cargo and roll on/roll off vessels. Two vessels up to 130 m length overall and with a maximum 11 m draft can berth at this pier.
Caniçal Port is dedicated to containerships cargo regular/weekly operations, project cargo operations are heavy limited to week days of Wednesday to Friday, or on weekends subject to surcharge.
Traffic figures: Approx. 40 vessels call at the port annually.
