General Description
Location: Burns Harbor is situated on the southern shore of Lake Michigan at Portage, 48km E of Chicago. General overview: The port is open all year to Lakers and inland waterway traffic, but closed to ocean going vessels between Dec-Apr when the Seaway closes. The port area covers 226ha and has 12 berths capable of handling general, breakbulk, liquid bulk, containers and grain. Traffic figures: Approx 150 vessels and 2,500,000t of cargo (ship and barge) handled annually. Max size: Max draught 8.2m.
