General Description
Location: The Port of Mkoani is situated at the southwest end of Pemba Island, which is approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of the Kenya/Tanzania border.
The island is separated from the mainland by the Pemba Channel.
General overview: As a small port, the Port of Mkoani primarily serves as a hub for dhows engaged in trade with Zanzibar. The inner anchorage of the port can accommodate only one vessel at a time.
It is the main port of Pemba Island and handles the majority of import and export activities for the island.
In recent years, Mkoani has emerged as the busiest harbor on Pemba Island, with most ferries arriving from Zanzibar or the mainland choosing Mkoani as their destination.
