General Description
Location: Assab is situated on the W side of the S Red Sea. General overview: Assab is the second port, behind Massawa, in Eritrea. The port mainly serves Ethiopia with approx 95% of the cargo handled destined for that country. The total port area extends to approx 890,000m² of which 45% is covered storage area. The commercial harbour has 7 berths for dry cargo ships, 1 Ro-Ro and 3 oil terminals. Exports are hides, skins, linseed, castor oil seeds, neuk seeds, coffee, cereals and dry fish. Imports include crude oil and refined products in bulk, oil in drums, general merchandise, machinery, transport equipment and cement. Traffic figures: Approx 1,200,000t of dry cargo, 32,000TEU and 1,300,000t of liquid cargo annually. Load line zone: Tropical. Max size: LOA 200m, beam 32m, draught 10.0m, 26,000DWT.
